Desalination plant The largest reverse osmosis water desalination plant in the world reaches 50% of its capacity. ACWA Power and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) announced the start of operations of the first phase of the Al Taweelah Independent Desalination Plant (IWP) in the United Arab Emirates. The facility can now produce 454.6 thousand cubic meters of desalinated water per day using carbon-intensive reverse osmosis (RO) technology, reaching 50% of the plant's capacity. Connected to Abu Dhabi's grid in December 2021, Al Taweelah now provides 100 million gallons of desalinated water per day. It will eventually reach 200 million gallons per day, making it the largest reverse osmosis (RO) facility in the world, with a capacity of 909,200 cubic meters per day.
The stand-alone desalination plant supports industries and the community in AI Taweelah and surrounding areas and will also play a key role in meeting Abu Dhabi's peak water demand, which is expected to increase in the first quarter of 2023. Al Taweelah IWP is partially Cell Phone Number List powered by solar energy, which is expected to represent at least 30% of the project's electrical capacity within eight years, with the aim of raising this figure to 55% by the end of the first quarter of the project's life. . The company did not reveal any details about the solar park that is being used to cover part of the electrical demand of the desalination unit. “The start of operations of the first phase of water desalination at the Al Taweelah IWP in Abu Dhabi is a milestone for ACWA Power, the UAE and the wider region. The potential emanating from water production through low-carbon technologies is exponential and will ensure that we continue to meet the water demands of Abu Dhabi and beyond, together with our partners,” said Paddy Padmanathan, Vice President and CEO from ACWA Power.
“We are proud to work hand in hand with EWEC as a trusted partner to operate the world's largest desalination project, confirming our commitment to contributing to the goals of the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 as the nation decarbonises the energy sector. We look forward to working towards the next step of operating the second phase with a total capacity of 200 MIGD.” ACWA Power owns and operates 15 desalination plants that produce more than 6.4 million m3/day, enough water to meet the needs of more than 40 million people per day. ACWA Power uses pioneering technologies and integrates clean energy to power water desalination, which has been partially installed in several regional mega projects such as Rabigh 3, Red Sea development project, Jubail 3A, Umm Al Quwain IWP and Shuaibah 3 IWP.
